Single Probe Lithotriptor Facilitates Urological Procedures

A next generation dual action lithotripsy system with integrated suction removes kidney stones even more efficiently.

The Olympus ShockPulse-SE (Stone Eliminator) lithotriptor integrates ultrasound and mechanical energies simultaneously from a single probe, thus enabling rapid fragmentation of all types of stones with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. Stone management procedures are faster and more efficient due to superior drilling speed, intuitive single-handed control, and fragment aspiration via the large lumen of the device, reducing the time previously required capturing stones with graspers or baskets. The system comes with a full range of probes and sizes.

The single probe delivers constant ultrasonic wave energy with intermittent ballistic shockwave energy at a rate of 300 Hz. Reduced heat development during use avoids damaging surrounding tissues. Thanks to the single handpiece design, there is no need to connect separate pneumatic and ultrasonic transducers, and there is no need for a footswitch. The ergonomic placement of buttons allows for physician control during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), ureterorenoscopy (URS), and bladder procedures. The Olympus ShockPulse-SE is a product of Olympus (Tokyo, Japan).

“This is an exciting time to be a medical device company in the urology space,” said Richard Reynolds, executive vice president of sales, marketing, and shared services at Olympus Corporation of the Americas Medical Systems Group. “New advancements in imaging, stone management, and the use of proprietary tumor detection technology, combined with our commitment to valuable partnerships and innovations in pricing structures, are helping physicians meet the triple aim of healthcare reform by improving quality, reducing costs, and enhancing patient satisfaction.”
