A new radiosurgery suite intended for precise noninvasive surgical procedures in the treatment of cancer has been unveiled at the 27th International Medical Instruments and Equipment Exhibition in Beijing (China).

The system uses sophisticated software and hardware to ablate abnormal tissue such as tumors with high radiation doses, and sub-millimeter accuracy, which ensures minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The system can target multiple tumors at once, and can deliver up to 2,400 monitor units per minute.

The Edge radiosurgery system was developed by Varian Medical Systems (Palo Alto, CA, USA), a leading manufacturer of cancer treatment hardware and software. The Edge system has been used for treating lung, brain, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and other types of cancer.

Ning Wen, PhD, stereotactic radiosurgery physics lead, stated "The Edge offers multiple advanced imaging modalities, including on-demand X-ray imaging and 4-D cone-beam CT, for localization and tracking of the patient's position throughout the treatment, which has greatly enhanced our confidence in the accuracy and efficiency of frameless stereotactic treatment. It has given us a variety of strategies to take aim at cancer."
