Human-Machine Collaboration to Redefine Healthcare Market in 2018

Human-machine collaboration will bridge the gap between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans in 2018, leaving aside the man versus machine competition. Non-traditional players such as Amazon, Apple, Google, and IBM will start having a tangible impact on the healthcare ecosystem. Competing outside their conventional arena, these organizations are pushing traditional healthcare companies to break their main business model and make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and consumer-centric. AI Predicts Risk of Readmission for Heart Failure Patients

Hitachi, Ltd. and Partners Connected Health have collaborated to develop artificial intelligence (AI) technology, which can very accurately predict the risk of hospital readmissions within 30 days among patients with heart failure. The AI technology helps choose appropriate patients to participate in a readmission prevention program after hospital discharge and provides an explanation as to why the patients have been identified as high risk ones. Google Releases AI Tool for Precision Medicine

Google LLC has announced the open source release of DeepVariant, a deep learning technology to reconstruct the true genome sequence from high-throughput sequencing (HTS) data with significantly greater accuracy than previous classical methods. DeepVariant, which was developed after more than two years of research by the Google Brain team, in collaboration with Verily Life Sciences, transforms the task of variant calling, as this reconstruction problem is known in genomics, into an image classification problem well-suited to Google's existing technology and expertise. Within a year of its development, the deep learning model had won the 2016 PrecisionFDA Truth Challenge award for Highest SNP Performance, outperforming state-of-the-art methods. Since then, the Google Brain team has reduced the error rate by over 50%. More...
