Electromagnetic Navigation Optimizes Sinus Surgery Procedures

A novel balloon sinus dilation system offers navigation technology that helps the surgeon confirm anatomy before balloon placement.

The NuVent electromagnetic (EM) Sinus Dilation System is designed for use during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), providing an additional tool to help surgeons move tissue and bone around the openings of the frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses when restoring proper sinus drainage. The system combines plug-and-play simplicity with technological innovation, allowing the surgeons to see the precise location of the NuVent tip on the Fusion ENT Navigation System before balloon placement.
The NuVent EM system is composed of three parts; the balloon sinus seeker, available in various shapes and angulations; pneumatic tubing sets; and an inflator with a protective valve indicator to help prevent accidental over-inflation. The device is delivered with sinus seekers that are precalibrated, and once they are plugged in to the Fusion ENT Navigation System, the position of the tip is displayed in real time on the screen of the Fusion system. The NuVent EM system and the Fusion ENT Navigation System are products of Medtronic (Minneapolis, MN, USA).
“NuVent is very appealing to customers because of its novel built-in surgical EM navigation, ease of use, and the familiar sinus instrument styles,” said Vince Racano, vice president and general manager of the ENT division at Medtronic. “This system is another example of our innovative integration of technologies and therapies that brings Medtronic Surgical Synergy to the operating room, driving procedural excellence, economic value, and patient care.”
