Handheld Device Uses Light Energy in Treatments

A novel device delivers blue, red, and near-infrared (NIR) light energy to safely address a wide variety of musculoskeletal and dermatological conditions.

The BioPhotas (Anaheim, CA, USA) Celluma POD light therapy device emits light in a range of wavelengths, which are absorbed by molecules participating in diverse cellular processes. The result is decreased inflammation, increased microcirculation, and an increase in collagen production, all speeding cellular healing. The Celluma POD is designed to treat periorbital and full-face wrinkles, acne, muscle and joint pain, muscle and joint stiffness, muscle tissue tension, muscle spasm, arthritis, and compromised local blood circulation.

The photonic energy is delivered via light emitting diode (LED) technology, which stimulates the basic energy process in the mitochondria of each cell, particularly under NIR light. In addition, according to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), DNA synthesis in fibroblasts and muscle cells is quadrupled when exposed to LED light. The pod-shaped handheld device can be applied almost anywhere on the body, or even used in a hands-free form in certain treatments areas.

“Leveraging the clinically-proven performance of our LED panel devices, we are introducing a handheld LED device that is different from any other device available on the market today,” said Patrick Johnson, President and CEO of BioPhotas. “Typically, handheld light therapy devices are configured for a single purpose, like treating pain or acne. However, the Celluma POD has three separate programs all in a single device for treating acne, wrinkles, and musculoskeletal pain in a targeted fashion.”

Light therapy consists of exposure to daylight or to specific wavelengths of using polychromatic polarized light, lasers, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light. The light is administered for a prescribed amount of time and, in some cases, at a specific time of day.
