KUKA AG (Augsburg, Germany) presented new application examples for its robots in the medical technology sector at this year's MEDICA, the world's largest annual medical technology trade fair, which took place from 18-21 November in Düsseldorf, Germany. At the 2019 edition of MEDICA, more than 5,000 exhibitors from 70 countries presented their newest products and ideas. The event also drew more than 120,000 trade visitors from over 170 countries.
KUKA is a supplier of intelligent automation solutions and offers robotic solutions for the medical and healthcare sectors. Robot systems from KUKA are suitable for a wide range of applications in robotic medical technology: from diagnosis and operations to rehabilitation.
At MEDICA 2019, KUKA presented the LBR Med lightweight robot –the first robotic component for integration into a medical product that is certified according to the CB Scheme. The versatility of the collaborative robot for the medical sector was illustrated to visitors at the event using five application examples, including an ultrasound demonstration. Here, an ultrasound transducer mounted on the flange of the LBR Med is guided manually by the operator over the body that is to be examined. The robot records the trajectory and can then repeat the learned path independently and with a constant pressure.
At KUKA’s booth at MEDICA 2019, visitors gained an impression of the products of its partners who successfully use KUKA medical robotics in clinical applications: for example in X-ray imaging or as radiotherapy robots. Visitors to KUKA’s booth received a first-hand experience of Sculptura, a mobile platform developed by Sensus Healthcare for intraoperative radiotherapy. In a first step, the product is to be used in the treatment of breast cancer. The treatment method of intraoperative radiotherapy is characterized by the fact that the exposed tumor bed can be irradiated during surgery. The mobile solution from Sensus Healthcare thus makes cancer treatment more flexible. The integrated 7-axis sensitive LBR Med robot from KUKA enables fast, targeted and extremely precise radiation dosage.
Additionally, KUKA presented the new KR QUANTEC. The new generation of the all-round talent in the high payload category is an impressive and highly flexible machine. Their numerous installation options and comprehensive features provide a high degree of flexibility with regard to integration in a wide range of medical applications.
