NeuroLogica Corporation (Danvers, MA, USA), a manufacturer of medical imaging equipment, and MEYTEC GmbH (MEYTEC; Werneuchen/Seefeld, Brandenburg, Germany), which specializes in telemedicine solutions, have announced the development of the world’s first comprehensive mobile stroke ambulance.
First conceived by the Charite-University Medicine Berlin, with the support of MEYTEC GmbH, the Stroke-Emergency-Mobile unit, VIMED STEMO, combines MEYTEC’s innovative telemedicine solutions with NeuroLogica’s state-of-the-art portable CT scanner, CereTom, a portable 8-slice CT scanner that delivers high-quality perfusion scans, allowing physicians onboard the ambulance to quickly evaluate, diagnose, and treat the patient within the first hour of stroke onset.
Utilizing 3G, 4G, and satellite technology, VIMED STEMO allows laboratory results, high-quality images, and care instruction to be transmitted to emergency rooms or trauma centers in real time, enabling patients to be treated faster as well as reducing possible disabilities resulting from stroke.
“With the technological solution realized in STEMO, we have got a fascinating mobile facility that has already proven its technological stability and clinical usefulness in hundreds of cases,” said Heinrich Audebert, professor, Charite-University Medicine and head, Stroke-Emergency-Mobile association. “Hyper-acute stroke care, including thrombolytic treatment before arrival at a hospital, has become reality in Berlin.”
David Webster, vice president, global sales and marketing, NeuroLogica, agrees that VIMED STEMO is critical for the early intervention and treatment of stroke.
“A large part of NeuroLogica’s vision is to deliver high quality imaging to people and places around the world that otherwise would not have access to this life saving technology,” said Mr. Webster. “The partnership between NeuroLogica and MEYTEC, resulting in the development of the comprehensive stroke ambulance, is a real-world fulfillment of that vision. NeuroLogica is delighted to be part of this groundbreaking advancement in rapid stroke diagnosis and treatment.”
