Detroit Medical Center (DMC; MI, USA) has unveiled a new six-story hospital that will provide patients with comprehensive cardiovascular care and preventive services.

Built on a 32,000 m2 site at the south end of the DMC campus, the new Heart Hospital which has an area of 20,000 m2, will be home to the DMC Cardiovascular Institute and the center for all of DMC’s heart and vascular specialists, including its team of interventional cardiologists, known as Cardio Team One, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will feature six catheterization labs and other procedure rooms to perform an array of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures, including percutaneous angioplasty, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and peripheral vascular disease (PVD) treatments.

The new hospital, built at a cost of USD 78 million, will also provide advanced imaging technologies, ergometry, and stress testing facilities to diagnose cardiovascular disorders, as well as electrocardiogram (ECG) services. Additionally, the hospital will have a retail pharmacy, physician offices, and a new parking structure with more than 1,700 spaces. The hospital, one of the first dedicated cardiovascular care facilities in the Great Lakes region, was designed for the comfort of patients, their families, and visitors with a cafe, spacious waiting areas and landscaped outdoor gardens.

“Advances in technology now enable us to treat many different heart problems in a minimally invasive way for faster recovery and shorter hospital stays,” said Theodore Schreiber, MD, president of the DMC Cardiovascular Institute and the DMC Heart Hospital. “With the launch of this world-class facility, designed and dedicated for the care of heart patients with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, DMC is taking another major step toward becoming an internationally-recognized center of excellence in cardiovascular medicine.”

DMC also operates the DMC Children's Hospital with nine specialty centers, DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital, DMC Harper University Hospital, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, and the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, among others.
